JOHN CAGLE
Captain John A. Cagle, Commander of the Criminal Investigations Unit. John Cagle, a native of Pickens County began his law enforcement career in 1979 as a Special Agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). He was assigned to various work units giving him experience investigating drug trafficking organizations, organized crime, and violent crimes such as robbery and homicide. In 2002 he was promoted to Special Agent in Charge of an investigative field office and was responsible for supervising all GBI activities in fourteen (14) counties of Northeast Georgia which included Pickens County. He retired in 2008 after working almost thirty (30) years at GBI. During his time at GBI, he testified in state and federal courts as an expert in the field of drug trafficking operations and methods and received the Special Award of Honor from the International Narcotic Officers Association in 1997 for his efforts in drug enforcement. He has received awards from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia. Shortly after leaving the GBI John went to work at the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office and worked there for almost six (6) years attaining the rank of Undersheriff. In 2014 he began teaching courses at the University of North Georgia in the Department of Criminal Justice specializing in Criminal Investigations and Death Investigations. In 2020 he left the University and joined the Pickens Sheriff’s Office as the commander of the Criminal Investigations Division (CID). He holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation from Georgia College, a Masters of Public Administration (MPA) from Columbus State University, and is a graduate of the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College.
